Covering all things dog training including tips, exercises and how to guides.
I never thought I'd be someone with a blog but here we are! I find it so rewarding to help people with their dogs, so a blog felt like a good way to get more training tips and ideas out into the world. If one person reads my blog and takes one small thing away to implement into their dog training, it'll all be worth it.
To start off my blog, I thought I would introduce myself and give an overview of my experience and my passions. Going forward though it will primarily be training advice, example exercises, tips, and discussion pieces. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments and if there is anything else you would like me to write about.
Origins
Coming from a family who has been involved in gundog training for over 40 years, my love for dogs is built into my DNA. As a child, I loved nothing more than spending time with my grandmother's black Labradors. When I was about 7 years old, we got our first family dog - a yellow Labrador called Pippa. I tagged along with my Dad to train and work her and this quickly developed into a personal passion. By the age of 9, I was competing and placing in junior tests across the country with Pippa and her brother Ben. Before I hit my mid-teens, I was competing in cold game and dummy working tests.
Entering the competition space at such a young age is daunting but people were exceptionally kind in giving me support and advice. Some of the words I heard in the field at 14 years old still ring in my head when I'm training now, over a decade later.
Present Day
Fast forward a few years and I went to the dark side (I bought a cocker!). I have enjoyed having a different breed to work and train, and she's certainly strengthened my abilities as a handler and trainer. I've been surprised how much I've enjoyed having a spaniel, and definitely think I will have a mixed team going forward now.
Currently I am the Regional Organiser for the northern region of the Ladies Working Dog Group. Encouraging female empowerment and nervous or novice handlers is something that the LWDG is exceptional at, and something I love being a part of.
My Training Approach
Like with anything, we all have our own personal styles and approach to training our dogs. I pride myself on being adaptable and finding the solution that works for the individual owner and the individual dog. I won't put you or your dog in a box based on appearance, natural talent or personality. I like to work with owners to find solutions that help their relationship with their dog thrive.
Thank you
I'll end my first blog by saying thank you to all those who have supported me so far in my new venture - there has been too many of you to name, but please know that I am very grateful.
